Exploring the Italian Mediterranean Coast
Some time ago I ordered three perfume samples of Piazzetta di Portofino. Piazzetta di Portofino is an Italian based company, founded in 2001. Piazzetta means small square. Portofino is a small famous Mediterranean fishermen village in the Italian Riviera.
If you see the pictures on internet, both the village and coast they look beautiful. I can imagine it being an inspiration for perfume and movies as well. The village advertises the Bold and the Beautiful has filmed in Portofino but personally I don´t think this is much of an advantage. Both the famous book Enchanted April and its movie adaptation were situated in Portofino.
Several perfumes have been made with this name as well. Christian Dior and Tom Ford have travelled to Portofino with Escale a Portofino and Neroli Portofino.
The scents of Piazzetta di Portofino are based on the flora of the Monte di Portofino Natural Park. This park was founded in 1935 and it said to house a large floristic concentration. Reading the perfume notes of the scents of Piazzetta di Portofino I do not see its link to the park flora but maybe you have to visit the park and smell the flora for yourself. My personal impression is that this is more a beautiful story but I do hope to visit it sometime to verify the natural scents of the park for myself.
The first perfume I tried was Acqua da Toeletta, a fresh citrus colonia style eau de toilette. This is in the style of the more famous Acqua di Parma Colonia. After reading the notes on the website I thought I would like the Acqua di Toeletta most, as it was described as a citrus scent. I did like the Acqua di Toeletta. But I did not think it was very special as I already have more wonderful citrus scents like the Acqua di Parma Colonia Assoluta.
Later I tried the Piazzetta di Portofino Profumo which I did not like at all as it smelled too much of hay to me. As I have hay fever, hay does not bring me pleasurable memories.
The last sample I tried, was the Fraganza Classica. This eau de parfum is dedicated to the wonderful Portofino landscape and the smell of flowers, citruses, trees and herbs that fills its air. In the beginning when I sprayed it, it did not smell very special. But later on it developed a very classy green flowery slightly powdery scent. Like a light breeze on a sunny dreamy afternoon in June. After some hours what remains is a light musky greenish scent. It is really surprising and nothing like I ever have tried before. This scent transports you to the Portofino landscape in a split second.
I bought one bottle and got one as a present from my boyfriend. He likes this perfume a lot as well. It is the first perfume we like both.
I have been exploring more Mediterranean inspired perfumes. Some were more tending towards the orange blossom or orange trees like Castile by Penhaligon´s or Hesperia by Sigilli. Others tend towards scents like tomato in Un Jardin en Mediterranee by Hermes. Those different views are very interesting to smell. It is a nice and easy way to travel the Mediterranean coast !
Fraganza Classica eau de parfum is classified as a chypre. Both sillage and longevity are superb.
Top notes: bergamot, orange and lime
Heart: lily-of-the-valley, violet and geranium
Base: amber, white musk, cedar, patchouli and sandalwood
Piazzetta di Portofino can be bought online. A 100 ml spray costs about 100 euro.
